Rocklin Historical Society & Museum
In 2002, the Rocklin Historical Society & Museum opened in a historic Moon House located at the corner of San Francisco Street and Rocklin Road. Now celebrating its 20th year, the museum offers a unique glimpse into the city’s history. Founder Roy Ruhkala, a Finn born in 1919, and his wife Peggy were committed to preserving the town’s history. Located in Placer County, Rocklin is a city of about 63,000 residents. Its surrounding mountains offer a panoramic view of the city. The city offers a wide range of cultural attractions, restaurants, parks, and shopping centers. A short drive from downtown Sacramento, Rocklin is a desirable residential community.
The museum’s mission is to preserve and interpret the city’s past. The museum is located in downtown Rocklin across from the original transcontinental railroad. Visitors to the museum will enjoy special tours, educational events, and local history. A museum membership is only $20 for the entire year.
The Rocklin Historical Society & Museum CA tells the story of the town’s early settlers. They found gold in the hills surrounding the area. They eventually buried the departed on the site. The town was later known for its gold mining history. Its proximity to the Sierras and nearby gold fields made the town a popular destination for miners.
Another historic site in Rocklin is the historic Old St Mary’s Chapel. This chapel is in need of restoration. The society needs to recruit volunteer docents and workers to help with the restoration. There are more than 2,000 volunteer hours needed for the restoration of the chapel. The Rocklin Historical Society & Museum CA strives to preserve the town’s heritage.
To support its ongoing work, the Rocklin Historical Society has established a fund at the Placer Community Foundation. A portion of its income from this fund will go toward its educational programs. The money will also support preservation projects. The historical society also hopes to preserve the site of the Capital Quarry, which provided granite blocks for the California State Capitol building.
The town of Rocklin has a rich history dating back to the 1880s. When the transcontinental railroad arrived, the city was an early granite mining community. The city was officially incorporated in 1893. Due to its mining industry, the town’s population grew exponentially. At one point, there were 22 quarries in Rocklin, sending thousands of train cars loaded with granite to Sacramento. It is believed that this granite was used for the base course of the state capitol.
