It’s estimated that 22 percent of adult Americans have at least one disability. From mobility issues to visual impairments, disabilities can create significant challenges in accessing the internet.
If you have decided to start a new website or redesign your current one, one of the most important is ensuring it complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
It’s not just the ADA that business owners need to be cautious, it’s users. Don’t get caught like Dominos when the Supreme Court ruled against them for being inaccessible to a blind man.
Pay Attention to These Aspects:
1. Keyboard Navigation Should be Enabled
2. Always include descriptions for images. Alt Tags
This tells someone what the image is, including Search Engines, so it’s great for SEO.
3. Test all forms on your website.
Make sure all the fields have text identifiers.
4. Eliminate or adjust time-constrained elements.
If you are using keyboard navigation you may need more time, so don’t let their order time out!
5. Simplify the visuals on your website.
Many reports have issues with shadows, not enough definition, no color contrast, too much information.
6. Provide alternatives to audio and video content.
Think Captioning, Sign Language, Audio transcript.
7. Avoid content that could trigger seizures or other physical reactions.
Make sure there aren’t any flashes of more than three times per second.
